Tarot Cards

The key to the gates of the subconscious and a mirror of the soul.

The word arcana comes from the Latin arcanus, meaning a mystery or a secret. In the past, Tarot cards were called "mysteries" because they were used to uncover the secrets of the soul and of the future. Many Tarot practitioners compare the symbols on the cards to a forgotten language that can be deciphered by the initiated.

A Tarot deck has 78 cards. It is divided into 22 Major Arcana (the Great Mysteries), which describe the journey of the soul and its archetypes, and 56 Minor Arcana (the Lesser Mysteries), which describe everyday life and are divided into four elements.

Reading the Tarot

All 78 cards form a kind of alphabet. To read it, however, you need the right spread. The phrase "reading the cards" sounds far more serious than "playing cards". That is why consulting the Tarot should be a kind of ritual that emphasises the seriousness of the moment.
