Four of Cups Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Four of Cups is a card of emotional stagnation and withdrawal. It shows a young man sitting under a tree with his arms and legs crossed. His posture is closed and defensive, and his eyes are fixed on the three cups standing in front of him. He seems bored, discouraged or deep in thought about what he already has but no longer enjoys.

The most important element of the card, however, is the fourth cup, emerging from a cloud right next to him. The man does not see it (or deliberately ignores it), because he is too focused on his own dissatisfaction or on contemplating the past. It is a symbol of a new opportunity, a gift from fate or a fresh inspiration that is within reach, but requires a change of perspective to be noticed.

This card often appears at moments when we feel jaded ("I've seen it all before"), apathetic or unmotivated. It is the "glass half empty" syndrome. The tree symbolises being rooted in the current state, and stability (four is a stable number) has turned into stagnation here.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Four of Cups is a signal to wake up. It may mean that you are rejecting help, compliments or invitations because you are "not in the mood". It is a warning against apathy and self-pity. On the other hand, it may be a time of much-needed meditation and re-evaluation of your desires - perhaps what the world is offering you (the fourth cup) is simply not what you really want deep down.
