Symbolism and Meaning

After the difficult transformation of Death, Temperance brings relief and healing. On the card we see an angel (often identified with the Archangel Michael) standing with one foot on the ground (reality) and the other in the water (the subconscious). He pours the water of life from one cup into another, mixing the essences in perfect proportions.

This is an act of spiritual alchemy - combining opposites (fire and water, spirit and matter) to create something new and harmonious. The triangle within a square on the angel's chest symbolises the spirit trapped in matter, striving for liberation. The irises growing nearby refer to the goddess Iris, messenger of the gods and a symbol of the rainbow - the bridge between heaven and earth.

The Temperance card teaches us the art of balance. It speaks of the need to avoid extremes and to remain calm and patient. It is Aristotle's "golden mean". This is not about passivity, but about conscious, balanced action that brings lasting results. It is a time to recharge, to use diplomacy and to look for compromise.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, Temperance is a sign of health, peace and harmony. It suggests that the situation requires patience and moderation. It may mean a successful combination of two different elements (e.g. in a relationship or at work), good cooperation or recovery from an illness. It is an encouragement not to act rashly, but to "water down the wine" and find a solution that is good for everyone.
