Nine of Pentacles Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Nine of Pentacles is a card of fulfilment in the material sphere, achieved through your own work and discipline. It shows an elegant woman standing in a lush garden (or vineyard), surrounded by abundant bunches of grapes and nine golden pentacles. The woman radiates calm, self-confidence and dignity. She is not doing physical work (as in the Eight) - she is already reaping the harvest.

A key element is the hooded falcon sitting on her hand. The falcon is a bird of prey, a symbol of wild instincts, but here it is tamed and controlled. This means that the woman has achieved success through self-discipline, composure and intelligence. She is the mistress of her own fate. A snail is also often seen on the card, a reminder that true wealth is built slowly but steadily.

It is a card of people who are single by choice, of independent entrepreneurs and of people who can enjoy their own company. The Nine of Pentacles says: "I don't need anyone to feel valuable and secure". It is a picture of luxury, refinement, taking care of yourself and surrounding yourself with beauty.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Nine of Pentacles is an excellent financial omen. It means a large influx of cash, a successful investment, an inheritance or a moment when you can afford expensive purchases and holidays. In love it may point to a relationship between two independent people who are together by choice rather than out of need (e.g. financial). Often, though, it suggests a happy life on your own and a focus on personal growth.
