Knight of Cups

The Romantic Dreamer, Seeker of the Grail and Prince Charming

Knight of Cups Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Knight of Cups is the embodiment of romance, grace and following the voice of the heart. On the card we see a knight on a white horse that is not galloping into an attack (like the Knight of Swords), but stepping slowly and gracefully. In his hand he holds a golden cup, as if carrying a sacred gift or an offer. His armour gleams and his cloak is decorated with fish, emphasising his connection with the element of water and the world of emotions.

A key detail is the wings on the knight's helmet and boots. They refer to Hermes (the messenger of the gods), suggesting that the Knight of Cups is a herald of news, but also a person with a vivid imagination who sometimes has his head in the clouds. The horse bows its head towards the river, symbolising respect for the subconscious and intuition.

He is the archetype of "Prince Charming" or of the artist. He is guided by ideals, love and beauty. He does not fight with force, but wins hearts with charm and diplomacy. The card speaks of an approaching emotional opportunity - it may be a proposal (of marriage or business), an invitation, or simply the arrival of someone who will bring poetry and feeling into our lives.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Knight of Cups most often heralds the arrival of a romance, a marriage proposal or an offer that will touch your heart. It means acting on emotions rather than cold calculation. It is an encouragement to follow your dreams and not to be afraid to show your feelings. It may also symbolise a person (usually a young man) who is sensitive, artistic and ready to make sacrifices for love.
