Eight of Wands Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Eight of Wands is unusual among the Minor Arcana because (in the Rider-Waite deck) it rarely shows human figures. We see eight blossoming wands flying through the air against a calm, green landscape. It is a card of pure energy in motion, dynamism and speed. After a period of struggle and defence (the Seven), the obstacles disappear and things suddenly speed up.

The wands fly in an orderly formation, suggesting focused energy, concentration on the goal and an absence of chaos. The clear sky symbolises the absence of obstacles and a clear situation. They are flying downwards, which means they are approaching the ground - the results of our actions will manifest "any moment now". It is often called the card of "the arrows of love" or of sudden news.

It is the card of the moment when everything starts happening at once. It symbolises rapid progress, travel (especially by air), long-distance communication and sudden changes. It says that the time for hesitation is over - now you have to act quickly, seize opportunities as they fly by and go with the flow of events.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Eight of Wands is a signal: "Get ready to speed up". It is the end of stagnation and delays. Events will snowball. The card often heralds sudden, positive news (e-mails, phone calls, letters), unexpected journeys or a sudden outburst of feelings (love at first sight). It calls for quick reactions, decisiveness and "catching the wind in your sails".
