King of Cups Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The King of Cups is a figure radiating calm and authority. He sits on a stone throne floating on a rough sea. Unlike other cards, the King does not fight the element of water, but rules over it. His feet stay dry, which symbolises complete control over his emotions. Although the waves around him are restless (an outside world full of chaos), he remains unmoved, balanced and self-assured.

In one hand he holds a cup (the realm of feelings) and in the other a sceptre (a symbol of power). In the background we often see a leaping dolphin (a symbol of joy, intelligence and friendship) and a ship (a symbol of trade and the material world). This means that the King of Cups can combine spirituality and sensitivity with the hard realities of everyday life. He is a master of diplomacy.

This card represents emotional maturity. It is the archetype of the wise father, adviser, therapist or guardian. He is not as effusive as the Knight, nor as intuitive as the Queen - he is stable. He understands human nature, can forgive and give advice, but does not let emotions take over his judgement.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the King of Cups means the presence in your life (or in yourself) of an energy of calm and balance. He heralds support from an older man who is kind and trustworthy. In love he is the ideal partner - caring, faithful and stable. At work - a boss who looks after the atmosphere in the team and resolves conflicts through negotiation rather than force.
