The Meeting of Soulmates, Union and Harmony

Two of Cups Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Two of Cups is one of the most positive cards in the deck when it comes to relationships. It shows a woman and a man standing opposite each other, looking deep into each other's eyes and exchanging cups. It is a gesture of making a promise, of vows, or simply of sharing emotions as equals. There is no domination here - there is partnership, respect and mutual attraction.

Above the couple hovers the Caduceus of Hermes - a staff entwined by two serpents and crowned with a lion's head. The caduceus is a symbol of trade, but above all of exchange, balance, healing and communication. The lion's head symbolises passion, sexual power and the fire that is needed for a feeling to last. It is the union of opposites (masculine and feminine) in perfect harmony.

This card is often called "the little Lovers". But while the Lovers card (Major Arcana) speaks of great life choices, the Two of Cups focuses on intimacy, the beginnings of a relationship, falling in love and the feeling that we have met someone who understands us without words. It is the archetype of the "soulmate" and the emotional mirror.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Two of Cups means reconciliation, agreement and the start of cooperation. In love it heralds a new, promising romance, an engagement or a renewal of feelings in a long-term relationship. In business it announces a successful merger, the signing of a favourable agreement or meeting a partner you are on the same wavelength with.
