The Magician Tarot card

Symbolism and History

The Magician, numbered I, is the first card to represent conscious action and active potential. Unlike the Fool, who follows his instinct, the Magician has the knowledge and the tools to shape the reality around him. He is an intermediary between the world of spirit and the world of matter, which is symbolised by his gesture: one hand raised to the sky (drawing inspiration), the other pointing to the earth (manifesting that inspiration).

On the table before the Magician lie the four symbols of the Minor Arcana: the Wand (fire - will), the Cup (water - feelings), the Sword (air - intellect) and the Pentacle (earth - matter). This means that he rules over all four elements and can use them to achieve his goals. The infinity sign (lemniscate) above his head and the serpent devouring its own tail (Ouroboros) around his waist symbolise infinite potential and cyclicality.

The Magician is the archetype of the alchemist, the creator and the initiator. He is the force that turns ideas into deeds. His self-confidence comes from a deep understanding of the laws that govern the universe and the ability to use them. He is the archetype of masculine, active energy (Yang).
