King of Wands Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The King of Wands is the ultimate embodiment of the mature, masculine energy of fire. He sits on a throne decorated with lions and salamanders, holding a blossoming wand like a sceptre of power. His posture is confident but, unlike the Knight, he is no longer in constant motion. He has reached his position and now rules his empire with authority.

His gaze is directed into the distance, symbolising vision and looking at "the bigger picture". The salamander at his feet, biting its own tail, symbolises the completion of a cycle, maturity and full mastery of the element of fire. The King not only has ideas (like the Page) and courage (like the Knight), but also the wisdom and willpower to put them into practice on a large scale.

This card represents a natural leader, an entrepreneur and an inspirer. He is a person who can lead crowds not by force but by charisma and a clear vision of the goal. The King of Wands is the archetype of "the boss" who is demanding but also full of passion, and who can motivate his team to achieve the impossible.
