Two of Swords Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Two of Swords is a picture of stalemate and inner conflict. The card shows a woman sitting on a stone bench with her eyes covered. In her hands she holds two heavy swords, crossed over her chest in a defensive gesture. Behind her we see a rough sea (emotions) and rocky islets, and a crescent moon shines in the sky.

The blindfold does not mean that the woman cannot see - she refuses to look. It is a conscious cutting-off from reality or from a truth that is too painful. The crossed swords protect her heart (the heart chakra) from being hurt, but at the same time form a barrier through which nothing can pass - neither pain nor love. It is a state of "cold peace" or a truce.

This card symbolises the moment when we are stuck between two options and neither seems good. We are paralysed by the fear of making the wrong decision, so we make none. We try to solve the problem with logic (the swords), ignoring the intuition and emotions (the water and the moon) that are trying to break through.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Two of Swords means a stalemate. It may be a conflict in which both sides are silent ("the silent treatment"), or an inner dilemma (heart vs head). It often points to denial of problems - we pretend everything is fine just so as not to upset a fragile balance. The card suggests that you must take off the blindfold and face the truth in order to move forward.
