Five of Swords Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Five of Swords is a card that shows a triumph, but one with a very bitter taste. In the foreground we see a man with an ironic, spiteful smile gathering up three swords. Two more lie on the ground. In the background two figures are walking away towards the sea with bowed heads - they are defeated, humiliated and resigned. The sky is ragged and grey, heralding chaos and tension.

This card symbolises a situation of "winning the battle but losing the war". The victor has won the swords (the arguments, the point), but has lost friends and respect. It is a picture of ambition that destroys relationships, of selfishness and lack of empathy. It shows the moment when the desire to prove you are right matters more than agreement and the good of another person.

The Five of Swords often appears in the context of quarrels, workplace bullying, intimidation or foul play. It warns that the tactic of "trampling over others to reach your goal" leads to isolation. On the other hand, for the figures walking away in the background, the card is a sign that sometimes the only way to win is to give up and leave a toxic situation in order to keep what dignity is left.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Five of Swords points to a conflict in which there are no real winners. It may mean an aggressive quarrel, betrayal, intrigue at work or hostility around you. It suggests that someone is playing dirty, or that you yourself are being too ruthless. It is time to swallow your pride and ask yourself: "Is it worth being right if it leaves me alone?".
