Eight of Swords

A Mental Prison, the Illusion of Helplessness and Paralysing Fear

Eight of Swords Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Eight of Swords is the picture of a person imprisoned by their own fears. The card shows a woman, blindfolded and with her hands bound, standing in the middle of a circle of eight swords. The landscape is grey and gloomy, and at her feet are puddles of water (the emotions that paralyse her). In the distance a castle looms - a symbol of security that seems out of reach.

The key to understanding this card is to notice that the prison is largely an illusion. The swords do not form a closed cage - there is plenty of room between them to pass through. The bonds are loose and the woman is alone; no one is guarding her. She could take off the blindfold and walk away, if only she stopped being afraid. It is a symbol of a psychological block, not a physical obstacle.

This card appears when we feel like victims of circumstance. We think: "I have no way out", "Nothing can be done". It is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The Eight of Swords speaks of over-analysing (the element of Air), which leads to paralysis in decision-making. We are blind to solutions that are within reach because we focus on the problems.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Eight of Swords means a feeling of powerlessness, pressure and fear of acting. You may feel cornered by criticism, dark thoughts or a difficult life situation. Yet the card is a call to wake up. It says: "Open your eyes. The force holding you is your own fear. You have the power to free yourself - you only need to dare to take the first step".
