Nine of Swords Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Nine of Swords is a card of deep mental suffering, which we often exaggerate in our own heads. It shows a figure sitting up in bed with their face buried in their hands, waking from a nightmare. Above them, against the black background of the night, hang nine swords arranged horizontally, like the rungs of a ladder or the bars of a prison.

Notice that none of the swords touches the figure. This is a key symbol: the threat is not physical, but mental. It is our thoughts, fears, guilt and worries that attack us most strongly at night, when we are alone. The quilt covering the figure is decorated with roses and astrological symbols, suggesting that despite the chaos in the mind, the outside world and the cosmic order remain intact.

It is a card of sleeplessness, stress and analysing the darkest scenarios ("what if..."). It often points to pangs of conscience or a secret that keeps you awake. Yet the Nine of Swords reminds us that the night is darkest just before dawn. Most fears disappear as soon as the sun rises and we look at them with a clear head.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Nine of Swords signals that your mental state is in poor shape. You are worrying in advance and fear is paralysing your actions. It may mean depression, trauma or simply a period of intense stress. The card is a call for help - don't bottle it up, talk to someone, because your demons are only frightening in the dark.
