Queen of Swords Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Queen of Swords is a figure who commands respect. She sits on her throne in profile, suggesting that she looks to the future and does not look back on the past. In her right hand she firmly holds a sword pointing straight up - a symbol of the pursuit of truth and justice. Her left hand is extended in a gesture that says: "You may approach, but keep your distance".

Butterflies adorn her crown, a symbol of the transformation of thought and freedom of spirit. The sky behind her is full of clouds, meaning that the Queen is perfectly at home in the world of ideas and intellect. She is often associated with a widow or a woman who has been through a lot - one who has known pain (the swords) but, instead of being broken by it, has forged it into wisdom and strength.

She is the archetype of the independent woman who does not need anyone to feel worthy. She is painfully honest, logical and objective. She does not let herself be manipulated, and her "X-ray" gaze can see through any lie. Although she may be seen as cold, her intentions are pure - she simply values truth above emotional games.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Queen of Swords advises you to follow your head, not your heart. It is a time for clear communication, setting boundaries and assertiveness. She may point to meeting an intelligent woman (e.g. a lawyer, doctor or boss) who will help you solve a problem, but will not "pat you on the head". It is a card of professionalism, honesty and self-reliance.
