II. The High Priestess

Guardian of Mysteries and the Inner Voice

The High Priestess Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

If the Magician represents activity and conscious action, the High Priestess is his opposite and complement: passivity, silence and the deep subconscious. She sits at the gates of the temple between two pillars - a black one (Boaz) and a white one (Jachin) - which symbolise the duality of the world she rules over. She does not choose one side, but remains in perfect balance between light and shadow.

The scroll she holds, inscribed TORA (the law), is partly covered, suggesting that secret knowledge is only available to those who are ready to look deep within themselves. The crescent moon at her feet links her with the cycles of nature, intuition and feminine energy. She is identified with Isis - the goddess of magic and mysteries, whose veil no mortal may tear away unpunished.

The High Priestess is the archetype of the Wise Woman, the Witch (the one who knows) and the Healer of Souls. She teaches us that not every question has a logical answer. Sometimes we have to trust our hunches, our dreams and that quiet voice within us that knows the truth before the mind has time to analyse it.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the High Priestess suggests slowing down and listening to your intuition. It is a time for reflection, not for sudden action. She may point to secrets that will soon come to light, or to a need to explore spiritual knowledge. She often represents a highly sensitive person who has influence not through force but through wisdom and calm.
