Three of Swords

A Broken Heart, Emotional Pain and Cleansing Rain

Three of Swords Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Three of Swords is one of the most recognisable and evocative cards in the deck. It shows a large red heart floating in the air, pierced by three swords. In the background we see heavy grey clouds and streams of rain. The image is simple but extremely eloquent: it symbolises deep emotional pain, grief and suffering.

The swords here represent thoughts, words and logic that wound the feelings (the heart). Often this pain does not come from a physical injury, but from a painful truth we have heard or understood. The rain in the background symbolises tears, but also a necessary process of cleansing. After every storm, even the most violent, the air becomes cleaner and the sun eventually comes out from behind the clouds.

This card does not always mean the end of the world. It often speaks of release - piercing the heart is a metaphor for lancing a boil and letting out pent-up emotions. It is a pain that is necessary in order to move on. It may mean a break-up or betrayal, but also the moment when we stop deceiving ourselves.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Three of Swords heralds a difficult period in matters of the heart. It may be a disappointment in love, a divorce, a quarrel with a friend or being hurt by someone's harsh words. Sometimes it points to health problems (the heart) or grief after a loss. But its most important lesson is accepting the pain - do not run from it, live through it, cry it out, and you will regain your strength.
