Seven of Swords Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Seven of Swords is a card of cunning, tactics and acting in secret. It shows a man sneaking out of an enemy camp. He carries five swords in his arms and leaves two stuck in the ground. His expression is smug, and the way he moves (on tiptoe, looking back over his shoulder) suggests that he does not want to be noticed.

This card has a dual nature. On the one hand it symbolises a thief or a cheat, someone who acts unethically and escapes with the loot. On the other hand it may mean a clever strategist who knows that an open attack (as in the Five of Swords) would end in defeat, so he chooses diplomacy, a ruse or a quiet retreat to save his strength for later.

It is the archetype of the "lone wolf". The figure on the card acts alone, relying only on his own intelligence. The Seven of Swords often speaks of avoiding responsibility, slipping out "through the back door" or using half-truths. It is a warning: either someone is trying to deceive you, or you yourself are trying to outsmart the system (and may get caught).

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Seven of Swords suggests that the situation requires cunning rather than force. It may mean the need for discretion or an unusual tactic. Often, however, it warns of theft (physical or intellectual), betrayal, lies or insincerity in a relationship. It may also speak of a "French exit" - disappearing without saying goodbye.
