The Hanged Man Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Hanged Man is one of the most intriguing cards in the Tarot. It shows a man hanging by one foot from a living tree (often in the shape of the letter T). His posture expresses no suffering - his face is calm and a halo shines around his head. This is not an execution but a voluntary sacrifice for the sake of a higher goal.

His legs form the shape of the number 4 (matter) and his arms a triangle (spirituality), which symbolises a reversal of the order of the world: spirit begins to dominate matter. The Hanged Man sees the world "upside down", which means a complete change of perspective, thinking outside the box and seeing a truth hidden from others.

The card refers to the myth of Odin, who hanged himself on the tree Yggdrasil to gain the wisdom of the runes. It teaches us that sometimes we have to stop, "suspend" our actions and sacrifice something (e.g. our ego or old beliefs) in order to gain something more valuable - spiritual enlightenment or the solution to a problem. It is a pause that is essential for growth.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Hanged Man suggests that things have come to a standstill, but that this stagnation has a deeper meaning. It is not a time for action (the Chariot) but for being and observing. It may mean the need to give up control and trust the process. It often points to a transitional period, to meditation, or to a situation in which we must look at the problem from a completely different angle.
