IX. The Hermit

Inner Light, Solitude and Wisdom

The Hermit Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Hermit is a card of searching for the truth - not in the outside world, but in the depths of one's own soul. It shows an old man standing on a mountain top, which symbolises spiritual maturity and distance from worldly matters. He is the archetype of the Sage, who voluntarily withdraws from the bustle of life to find answers to the most important questions.

In his right hand he holds a lantern in which a six-pointed star burns (the Seal of Solomon) - a symbol of wisdom and of the light of knowledge, which lights the way only a few steps ahead. The Hermit does not see the whole goal, but he trusts his experience. In his left hand he holds a staff - a symbol of support, authority and connection with the earth. His grey cloak symbolises discretion and modesty.

This card teaches that true knowledge requires silence. Unlike the Hierophant, who teaches the crowds, the Hermit learns alone, in solitude. It is a time of introspection, of analysing the past and planning the future. The Hermit reminds us that the answers we seek are already within us - we just need to quiet the noise of the world in order to hear them.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Hermit often suggests a need to withdraw, take a holiday or spend time alone with yourself. This is not loneliness that comes from rejection, but a conscious choice made for the sake of renewal and reflection. It may also mean meeting a mentor, a therapist or someone who will show you the right direction.
