Five of Cups Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Five of Cups is a card of deep sadness, mourning and focusing on what has been lost. It shows a figure wrapped in a black cloak (a symbol of mourning and isolation), standing with bowed head. In front of them lie three overturned cups whose contents have spilled out (wine or blood, symbolising lost emotions and joy). The figure is so absorbed in staring at the destruction that they notice nothing else.

The key to understanding this card, however, is the two cups standing behind the figure. They are full and untouched. They symbolise what survived the disaster: the support of loved ones, new opportunities or simply the fact that life goes on. In the background we see a river (the flow of emotions) and a bridge leading to a house or castle - which means that a return to stability is possible if only we turn away from the past and look to the future.

It is the classic picture of "crying over spilt milk". The Five of Cups does not deny the pain - the loss is real (three cups have been knocked over), but it warns against getting stuck in the role of the victim. It says that pain is inevitable, but suffering is a choice. As long as we look only at our losses, we cannot see the resources we still have.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, this card often heralds disappointment, heartbreak, a break-up or sadness over unmet expectations. It may mean pessimism and a tendency to see the glass as "half empty". Yet its deeper message is positive: "What you have lost had to go to make room for the new. Turn around and you will see that not everything is lost".
