Chinese Zodiac

The ancient wisdom of the East hidden in the cycles of nature.

While Western astrology is based on the movement of the Sun through the constellations over a yearly cycle, Chinese astrology is based on the lunar calendar and on cycles spanning many years. The foundation of this system is a 60-year cycle, divided into five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) and 12 animal patrons.

Legend has it that before leaving the Earth, the Buddha summoned all the animals. Only twelve came. As a reward for their loyalty, the Buddha named the following years after them, in the order in which they arrived. This is how the "Earthly Menagerie" came into being, which for thousands of years has helped people understand their character and destiny.

East and West: Two Worlds

The symbols of the Chinese zodiac often differ in meaning from our Western associations. Take the Rat, for example - seen negatively in the West, in China it is a symbol of cleverness, resourcefulness and prosperity. The Snake, in turn, is not a symbol of betrayal, but of wisdom, intuition and elegance. In Eastern culture the Dragon is not a beast to be slain, but a mighty guardian and a symbol of imperial power.
