Symbolism and Meaning

The Knight of Pentacles is the most hard-working and down-to-earth of all the knights in the Tarot deck. Unlike the charging Knight of Swords or of Wands, this Knight sits on a heavy black draught horse that is standing still. His armour is solid, and he holds a golden pentacle in his hand, gazing at it with attention and planning.

In the background we see ploughed fields, proof of the hard work already done. The Knight of Pentacles is not afraid of dirt, sweat or routine. He symbolises perseverance, a sense of duty and consistently pursuing a goal "step by step". He does not seek glory or adventure - he seeks measurable results and security.

It is a card of "slow but sure" progress. It recalls the fable of the tortoise and the hare - the Knight of Pentacles always wins the race, because he never gives up and never makes mistakes caused by haste. He represents a person you can always rely on, loyal, if perhaps not very spontaneous.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Knight of Pentacles speaks of the need to roll up your sleeves and focus on the details. It is not a time for risk or wild ideas, but for proven methods and hard work. In finances it means steady growth. In love it points to a partner who is faithful, predictable and concerned with security, though perhaps not very romantic in the traditional sense.
