Seven of Cups

A World of Illusion, Difficult Choices and the Traps of Imagination

Seven of Cups Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Seven of Cups is a mysterious and dreamlike card. It shows a dark silhouette (a shadow) standing before seven cups floating in the clouds. The clouds symbolise the realm of dreams, fantasy and the fleeting - here we are not firmly grounded in reality. Each cup contains a different gift, but not all of them are what they seem.

In the cups we see, among other things: a human head (love or narcissism), a veiled figure (mystery or spirituality), a snake (wisdom or betrayal), a castle (power and stability), jewels (wealth), a laurel wreath (fame) and a dragon (strength or fear). It is a test of our will and values. The card asks: "What do you really want?". The richness of the cups may be a gift, but also the curse of too many options.

This card often appears when we live in a world of illusion ("wishful thinking") or when we have so many possibilities in front of us that the fear of making a decision paralyses us. It is the moment our dreams are confronted with reality. Are you building castles in the air, or do you have a real plan?

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Seven of Cups is a warning against escaping into fantasy. It may mean that you are idealising your partner, have unrealistic expectations of your job or are deluding yourself that success will come by itself. On the other hand, it is a powerful card of visualisation and creativity - if you are an artist, it heralds a surge of incredible inspiration. The key here is choice - you must choose one cup and start acting in the real world.
