Death Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Death card (often marked with the number XIII or left without a name) arouses the greatest fear, though quite wrongly. It rarely means physical death. It is a metaphor for deep transformation, for the inevitable end of a certain stage that is necessary so that something new can be born. On the card we see a skeleton in armour riding a white horse - death is inevitable and concerns everyone, regardless of status (under its hooves lie a king, a child and a bishop).

In the background of the card there is often a rising sun between two towers - a symbol of hope and the immortality of the soul. The White Rose on Death's banner symbolises purity, rebirth and spiritual life. The card says: "You must close one door so that others can open". It is a painful but cleansing process, like a snake shedding its skin.

In numerology the number 13 means destroying the existing order (12) in order to create a new quality. It is the archetype of the Phoenix rising from the ashes. Death in the Tarot is the great cleaner - it removes from our lives whatever no longer serves us: old habits, toxic relationships, worn-out beliefs.

Interpretation of the Card

When Death appears in a spread, get ready for change. Something is definitely coming to an end - it may be a job, a relationship or a way of life. Do not fight it. Resistance will only bring suffering. Accept that things pass and make room for new experiences. It is a card of liberation and deep inner transformation.
