Seven of Pentacles Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Seven of Pentacles is a card of pausing work in order to assess its results. It shows a farmer leaning on his hoe and looking thoughtfully (or perhaps a little wearily) at a bush on which seven golden pentacles are ripening. He has already done the hardest work - dug the soil and sown the seed - and now all that is left is to wait.

It is a moment of contemplation. The farmer does not pick the fruit because he knows it is not yet fully ripe. The card symbolises the law of nature: "you reap what you sow", but it also reminds us that nothing happens instantly. The pentacles on the bush are a potential profit that needs time and protection before it can be enjoyed.

This card teaches humility before time. In a world that demands instant gratification, the Seven of Pentacles says: "Slow down. Check whether the direction you are going in still suits you". It is a time to correct your course, add up gains and losses and ask yourself: "Is this effort worth the reward that awaits me?".

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Seven of Pentacles suggests that the hard work has been done and now the time of waiting has come. Do not force events to move faster. In finances it means long-term investments (e.g. deposits, property) that will bring a profit in the future. At work it may point to a time when a project is being evaluated, or to waiting for your superiors' decision.
