XVI. The Tower

Sudden Change, the Fall of the Ego and Cleansing

The Tower Tarot card

Symbolism and Meaning

The Tower is a card of violent awakening. It shows a tall building standing on a mountain top, struck by lightning. The crown at the top is knocked off and two figures leap from the windows. The scene is dramatic, but it carries a deep message: structures built on false foundations (lies, ego, illusion) must collapse so that the truth can come to light.

The lightning is not a symbol of divine anger, but of sudden enlightenment and truth (the thunderbolt of Zeus/Jupiter). The crown symbolises materialism and pride, which cut us off from spirituality. The falling figures lose the ground beneath their feet, but thanks to this they can free themselves from the prison they built themselves. The Tower is the archetype of the Tower of Babel - a chaos that is necessary for reorganisation.

This card teaches humility. It reminds us that security based on material goods is an illusion. Sometimes life forces changes on us that we would never have started ourselves (unlike the Death card, where change is often a natural process). The Tower is a shock that wakes us from our lethargy.

Interpretation of the Card

In a spread, the Tower means a sudden, unexpected event that turns life upside down. It may be losing a job, a sudden break-up, an accident or... a sudden revelation that changes our view of the world. Although it seems a catastrophe at first, in the long run the Tower brings liberation. It removes what is unnecessary, making room for more solid foundations.
